DECEMBER 2015

Season's Greetings from ICM

Season's Greetings

On behalf of all of us at ICM, I would like to wish you and your family Happy Holidays and a productive and fulfilling 2016. We in ICM are looking forward to a busy year ahead, with the release of updated certification courses and innovative distance learning programs.

I would like to extend my personal thanks to those of you who have contributed to the Joan Cochet Memorial ICM Scholarship Fund. Your generosity will benefit a new Fellow in the coming year.

As always, if you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me at 757-259-1567 or jmeeks@ncsc.org.

Purposes & Responsibilities of Courts Revision Update & Release

Purposes & Responsibilities of Courts

The webinar we offered in November was a great success. ICM was able to share a sample of the new format of our course materials, as well as offer additional information about the revision process. The transformation has been complex, and now we have an impressive example to follow. We will soon be able to roll out the next courses on the list of revisions: Fundamental Issues of Caseflow Management, Court Performance Standards: CourTools, and High Performance Court Framework. We have begun the process for all of those courses and will provide updates and roll out information in the coming months.

All new PRC materials will be made available shortly after the first of the year. The NEW course will be offered in Williamsburg in January 2016 with Amy McDowell and Ross Munns team teaching as our faculty. We are very anxious to see the new course "in action." This will be the first opportunity to have faculty certified to teach the new course. The course is filling up, and we have a limited amount of seats still available.

The new course format and the amount of changes to the content are significant enough that ICM will require currently certified faculty to be recertified to teach this course. In order to provide the recertification with ease and simplicity for everyone, ICM will be conducting a series of webinars during the calendar year 2016 as a service to those needing the recertification. More detailed plans will be released in January. Information specific to this course will be released using the new Connected Communities. So, please continue to be on the lookout for new posts.

ICM Fellow Russell Brown III Receives Burger Award

The Warren E. Burger Award honors the late Chief Justice of the United States, who was instrumental in founding the National Center for State Courts and its Institute for Court Management. Chief Justice Burger was a staunch supporter of the mission of the National Center for State Courts to improve judicial administration through leadership and service to state courts.  The Burger Award recognizes an individual, other than a sitting judge, whose service, over a career or substantial period of time, has significantly contributed to improving the administration of the state courts.  Service may be at the local, state, or national level.  This prestigious award honors a person who demonstrates professional expertise, leadership, integrity, creativity, innovativeness, and sound judgment.

ICM would like to extend its congratulations to Russell R. Brown III, recipient of the Burger Award.  Russell is a member of the ICM Fellows Class of 2006.  Way to go Russell!

Congratulations to New NASJE President

Margaret Allen

ICM would like to send kudos to Margaret Allen, Fellows Class of 2015, on being sworn in as the new President of the National Association of State Judicial Educators (NASJE). Not only is Margaret a Fellow, she is also responsible for administering the ICM certification program for the Ohio Judicial College. Margaret has been a dedicated advocate for education and continues to partner with NCSC in offering quality programs for their staff. We look forward to supporting Margaret as she continues the distinguished work of judicial branch education during this new endeavor. To access the work Margaret, and other Fellows, have contributed to the court community, please see the NCSC website by clicking the "more" link below.

THE FELLOWS CORNER

Contours and Keys

At the 2014 annual NACM conference in Scottsdale, AZ, participants of the Fellows leadership seminar received a blank key from Mary McQueen, President of the National Center for State Courts. The key is simple yet distinctive: the neck is blank and has no teeth and the base is sky-blue with the white letters NCSC boldly displayed. Mary suggested that we all carry around the key and use it as a conversation starter for new professionals in court management, or to encourage seasoned managers looking to amp up their skillset and take on a challenge that bolsters the profession of court administration.
