California Appeal Court Justice Ronald B. Robie receives NCSC Distinguished Service Award

Williamsburg, Va. (March 24, 2014) –  The Hon. Ronald B. Robie, Associate Justice of the Third District Court of Appeal in California, is the recipient of the National Center for State Courts’ Distinguished Service Award, one of the highest awards presented by the organization. The Distinguished Service Award is presented annually to those who have made significant contributions to the justice system and who have supported the mission of NCSC.
“Justice Robie has dedicated his career to improving the administration of justice,” NCSC President Mary McQueen said. “As a former member of NCSC’s board of directors, Justice Robie has made significant contributions and advancements in judicial education and access to justice.”

Justice Robie served on NCSC’s Board of Directors from 2005 to 2011. Among his many accomplishments, he was instrumental in advancing the Center’s efforts to improve civics education. Justice Robie served as co-editor of a series of graphic novels – Justice Case Files – that help educate middle-and-high school students about how the justice system works.

Throughout his career, Justice Robie has served on numerous committees focused on improving the justice system. He currently serves as chair of the California Commission on Access to Justice, is chair of the Supreme Court Committee on Judicial Ethics Opinions, and a convener of Dividing the Waters (Water Judges Organization).  Justice Robie also served as chair of the Governing Committee for the California Center for Judiciary Education and Research for five years.

Justice Robie has served on the Third District Court of Appeal since 2002. Prior to this position he served as a state trial judge in Sacramento County for 19 years. In 2011, Justice Robie received the Ronald M. George Award for Judicial Excellence from the California Judicial Council, and in 2002 he was named Judge of the Year Award from the Sacramento County Bar Association.

National Center for State Courts, headquartered in Williamsburg, Va., is a nonprofit court organization dedicated to improving the administration of justice by providing leadership and service to the state courts. Founded in 1971 by the Conference of Chief Justices and Chief Justice of the United States Warren E. Burger, NCSC provides education, training, technology, management, and research services to the nation’s state courts.
