Judicial Salary Tracker update delivers an improved user experience

Nov. 2, 2022 — Comparing judicial salaries by level and state is now a breeze with enhancements to the online version of NCSC’s Judicial Salary Tracker.

The latest update — which includes data from every state, district, and all but two territories—features a new U.S. map display with enhanced filtering that allows users to access salary information by region. Users can also use a color key to highlight salary ranges on the map, delivering quick and easy-to-understand results.

“Comprehensive judicial salary data has proven to be indispensable to so many jurisdictions,” said Jesse Rutledge, NCSC’s Vice President for External Affairs. “It helps judicial leaders and court administrators press their case with legislative and executive branch officials and helps decision makers arrive at fair compensation for judges. We are excited to release this new online tool to allow for even better analysis.”

Each state contains information on the salary, ranking, and date of last increase. There is at-a-glance information on the minimum, maximum, mean, and median salary for each level of court. Users can also use the “time machine” feature—salaries and rankings back to 2012 are available with the click of a button. In 2000, the tracker added cost-of-living-adjusted (COLA) salaries for general jurisdiction judges, the greatest number of judges, to help show the impact of purchasing power on salaries.

To complement the interactive, online tracker, a pdf version includes all four maps and the complete table of states and territories listed in alphabetical order. There have been several special reports over the years, most recently an update on state judicial retirement plans.

The Judicial Salary Tracker has recorded compensation for justices of the courts of last resort, intermediate appellate courts, and judges of general jurisdiction trial courts since 1974.
