January 26, 2024 --  Since 2006, Gavel to Gavel has tracked state-by-state legislative activity with potential impact on state courts.

New and active legislation includes:

  • Judicial Security:
    • Nebraska proposes a statewide Court Security and Reimbursement Program;
    • Virginia and Wisconsin consider bills making it a crime to picket a judge's home; and
    • Wisconsin bills would allow judges to have their personally identifiable information removed from public records.
  • Judicial discipline: bills in Virginia and West Virginia would require examination and changes to judicial disciplinary commissions.
  • Oklahoma bill would term limit state supreme court justices to 12 years.
  • Missouri bill requires judges to render decisions within certain specified timeframes; judges who fail to do so will be fined $100 per day and referred to the state's judicial disciplinary commission.
