Kansas City, Missouri: Engagement Overview

Welcome and Meal

The Kansas City team and community partners used detailed scripts to guide their activities and assumed pre-assigned roles as event staff. Kansas City’s Mid-America Regional Council (MARC)—which also provided facilitation training for the steering committee and the iClicker technology—developed the engagement session scripts. Team members and partners introduced themselves and welcomed community members as they arrived. All participants also received complimentary meals.

After the initial introductions, court staff stepped back, and the engagement was co-led by a MARC professional facilitator to stay on track and a representative from one of the community stakeholder groups to encourage the public to speak more freely.

Background Information

During the meal, the Kansas City team played a revolving slideshow displaying basic facts about the municipal court, its services and dockets, and rights and responsibilities of court users. The Kansas City team also distributed an educational book about its court to all participants – “A Guide to the Kansas City Municipal Court.”

Polling Technology Demonstration

The Kansas City team distributed polling devices (“iClickers”) for real-time voting to engage participants with questions and discussion points. The iClickers and polling software allowed participants to instantly respond to multiple-choice questions displayed on a slideshow in real-time. During the orientation, the team used fun introductory questions to familiarize everyone to the iClicker polling technology.
