Interpreter Statutes and Rules

Coordination/Supervision of Interpreters: Credentialed at State Level/Scheduled at Local Level

Cost of Interpreter Services (including fees to freelance and salaries of staff interpreters): $1 Million - $3 Million

Compensation Range for Salaried Interpreters (spoken language): Unknown

Compensation Range for Freelance Interpreters (certified spoken language):  $25 - $50 per hour, Hourly rate depends on credentials. May be more than $50 per hour if LOS interpreter. Rule 42 provides hourly rate information

Compensation Range for Freelance Interpreters (certified sign language): Unknown

Difference in Pay between Spanish and LOTS Interpreters: Highest hourly rate for Spanish interpreters is $50. LOTS may be up to $75 per hour pursuant to judge's discretion as provided in Rule 42

Minimum Certification Requirements: Registered Interpreter: TN Ethics and Skills Building Workshop; Written Exam at 80%; Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) in English and target language; Background Check; Oath of Office  Certified Interpreter: Pass all above mentioned steps;  Pass NCSC Oral Examination at 70%;  Credential renewal, renewal fee and proof of completion of continuing education requirements must be completed every 3 years.
