Human trafficking awareness from the roadway to the courtroom

1:00 pm – 2:00 pm ET

Human trafficking is a pervasive crime that impacts individuals, families, and communities across the country. During Human Trafficking Awareness Month, join the Driving Justice Collective for this timely and important webinar focused on protecting our roadways, strengthening accountability, and supporting victims.

This session will explain what constitutes a "severe form of trafficking in persons" and why a conviction involving a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) can result in a lifetime commercial driver's license (CDL) disqualification. Enforcing this federal mandate is not only a matter of regulatory compliance — it is a critical victim-centered strategy that helps prevent further exploitation, disrupt trafficking networks, and uphold the integrity of the nation's transportation system.

Participants will also learn about our free, self-paced e-learning course designed for CDL holders. The course raises human trafficking awareness, emphasizes the role drivers can play as the eyes and ears on our roadways, and promotes safe reporting of suspicious activity. The webinar will highlight how courts and justice partners can integrate trafficking awareness and victim advocacy into traffic case adjudication, online case resolution, outreach efforts, and other system touchpoints.

This session will also underscore how consistent enforcement, education, and collaboration with victim advocates and service providers work together to safeguard victims, connect them to resources, and advance a more informed and responsive justice system.

Learning Objectives:

  • Define severe forms of human trafficking and explain the legal and regulatory implications of convictions involving commercial motor vehicles, including mandatory lifetime CDL disqualification.
  • Identify the role of courts and justice partners in enforcing CDL disqualification mandates while advancing victim-centered practices and coordination with victim advocacy and service providers.
  • Describe strategies for increasing human trafficking awareness among CDL holders through education, traffic case adjudication, online case resolution, and other court and system touchpoints to support victim safety and reporting.
