The free CORA portal showcases clerkships, which are typically one- to two-year paid roles for recent graduates that focus on legal research and writing. You'll also find openings for externships, which are temporary positions often for course credit, designed for students who want hands‐on experience. Alternatively, internships available across all educational levels offer an ideal starting point for anyone exploring a court career.

The process will vary by state, but there are some common elements to all applications. Check out our Tip Sheet for Applicants when you're ready to apply. Also, be sure to check for any requirements and deadlines specific to the position and apply early to maximize your chances.

During a state court clerkship, you'll take on various responsibilities and receive mentorship from judges, as well as regular interaction with attorneys and court staff. As a trial court clerk, duties can include conducting legal research, supporting courtroom activities, and assisting in real-time decision-making, while appellate court clerks engage in deep legal analysis and help draft judicial opinions.

After applying through CORA, the court will reach out to you if you are considered a good fit. If you've applied to multiple courts, inform us once you accept a position so we can withdraw your other applications.

You can post in-person or remote clerkships, externships, and internship opportunities in any division of your court. It does not have to be an internship under a judge or administrator.
